Description

We are so excited to be able to offer this class! What is anticlastic?

Anticlastic Raising is a technique of metal forming whereby sheet metal is formed directly with a hammer on a sinusodial (snake-like stake).
In this class we will focus on the bracelet form, using stakes and hammers to obtain our shape and texture. Join us for a two day workshop and learn the techniques use to create a beautiful piece you will wear home!

From the instructor:

Learn the basic concepts and techniques developed by the Celts over 2500 years ago, “rediscovered” by Hekki Seppa and Michael Good, of shell structures and anti-clastic hammering to create bracelets. Get to know and control the movement of the metal using the most fundamental and direct techniques of a few hammers and stake forms. Beginners can learn every step in the process- soldering is NOT required, and intermediate and advanced level students can expand the projects to their own levels.

We will begin with a basic hollow formed cuff, learning how to curve and close it. The second project will be an open wave edged anticlastic cuff preserving texture on the inside of the piece. More advanced students can use these techniques to create more complex and individualized projects in class as time permits.

As with most projects, preparation of the material takes time- to create a useful and comfortable piece. After that you will be working with steel and/or plastic hammers for much of the two days, with coaching on proper position and grip.

For practice, we will begin with 20 gauge brass sheet, but sterling silver and other materials are welcome. (It is advised to avoid argentium sterling due to lack of spring and risk of cracking when annealing)

*Please let us know if you will be wanting to use silver, the cost of silver is not included in the tuition. We can order it ahead of time.
